Why are we afraid to talk about the Holy Spirit?

Why aren’t Christians performing miracles today, like they did in scripture?

At church I hear people ask this question often and the answer is usually something like this.

“Well that was the Bible times, things are different now”

Everytime I hear this it makes me furious!!!!!!!

The real reason we aren’t performing miracles like in scripture is because Christians today are not as connected with the Holy Spirit. Yes, THE HOLY SPIRIT!!

A word that people at church don’t seem to want to talk about for whatever reason. I recently talked about the Holy Spirit with several “church leaders” and each time they either look at me like I have three heads, or try everything they can to change the subject!!

How can the church feel awkward when talking about the Holy Spirit? Are we ashamed of him? Do we not want him to live inside us? If this makes me angry, I can’t even begin to imagine how this must make God feel. The Holy Spirit is one of, if not THE greatest gift God gives us, and we get triggered when we talk about him? SERIOUSLY?!!! Do we not understand the power that is given to us!!!

Of course we aren’t performing miracles!!! Not when we ignore him. Have we really become so small minded? Didn’t Jesus tell his disciples you will do greater things than I?

John 14: 12 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.

But nobody at church wants to talk about it! I’ll never forget I was in a bible class the other day and the teacher (who I will leave anonymous) said this.

“There is nothing supernatural about the Bible”

I don’t think I need to explain how messed up that phrase is, just look at any great moment in scripture and it will prove that phrase dead wrong!

People in the church nowadays tend to follow what my mom refers to as a script.

You grow up in church, go to youth group, get accepted into a Christian college, get married to someone you met at the Christian college, have kids and the cycle starts all over again!

Nobody wants to be challenged, nobody wants to grow in their faith! They just want to pretend that everything is perfect and that there is no Spiritual war going on.

With people having attitudes like this of course we aren’t performing miracles!! Because we aren’t connected to the Spirit and we don’t even believe it can happen to begin with!!

This all reminds me of one of the most iconic scenes in all of Star Wars, lifting the X-Wing fighter.

Artoo waddles closer to Luke, chirping wildly, then scoots over the

edge of the swamp. Catching on, Luke rushes to the water's edge. The

X-wing fighter has sunk, and only the tip of its nose shows above the

lake's surface.

LUKE

Oh, no. We'll never get it out Now.

Yoda stamps his foot in irritation.

YODA

So certain are you. Always with

you it cannot be done. Hear you

nothing that I say?

Luke looks uncertainly at the ship.

LUKE

Master, moving stones around is

one thing. But this is totally

different.

YODA

No! No different! Only different

in your mind. You must unlearn

what you have learned.

LUKE

(focusing, quietly)

All right, I'll give it a try.

YODA

No! Try not. Do. Or do not.

There is no try.

Luke closes his eyes and concentrates on thinking the ship out.

Slowly, the X-wing's nose begins to rise above the water. It hovers

for a moment and then slides back, disappearing once again.

LUKE

(panting heavily)

I can't. It's too big.

YODA

Size matters not. Look at me.

Judge me by my size, do you?

Hm? Mmmm.

Luke shakes his head.

LUKE

(discouraged)

You want the impossible.

Quietly Yoda turns toward the X-wing fighter. With his eyes closed and

his head bowed, he raises his arm and points at the ship.

Soon, the fighter rises above the water and moves forward as Artoo

beeps in terror and scoots away.

The entire X-wing moves majestically, surely, toward the shore. Yoda

stands on a tree root and guides the fighter carefully down toward the

beach.

Luke stares in astonishment as the fighter settles down onto the shore.

He walks toward Yoda.

LUKE

I don't... I don't believe it.

YODA

That is why you fail.

This scene is an iconic masterpiece for a reason!! It’s one of the most quoted scenes in the entire saga. The writing is so on point! Luke (like the church) is thinking small and already accepting defeat before he even begins!

LUKE

Master, moving stones around is

one thing. This is totally

Different.

LUKE

(focusing, quietly)

All right, I'll give it a try.

LUKE

(panting heavily)

I can't. It's too big.

LUKE

(discouraged)

You want the impossible.

LUKE

I don't... I don't believe it.

I mean are we really surprised Luke wasn’t able to lift the spaceship?

Compare his dialogue to Yoda’s

YODA

No! No different! Only different

in your mind.

YODA

No! Try not. Do. Or do not.

There is no try.

YODA

Size matters not. Look at me.

Judge me by my size, do you?

Hm? Mmmm.

Pretty obvious Yoda had no problem believing he could lift the ship because he understood the power the force gave him (cough) sounds familiar!

The reason I love when Yoda says there is no try, is because when you give it a try, you’re not giving it your all, you're just hoping something good happens and not really fully believing it will turn out well. Very similar to this passage.

Revelation 3:16 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.

If you don’t believe in the power of the Holy Spirit you can’t perform miracles. As Yoda said at the end of the scene THAT IS WHY YOU FAIL!

The power is there!!! Yet we ignore it, or limit it!! This is God's power we are talking about!! GOD’S POWER!!!! There are no limits to what God can do through us!!! Don’t let Satan deceive you!!
